Performing Arts Spring 2018 Season

Rounding out Japan Society’s 110th anniversary, our spring season focuses on the Society’s relationship with New York artists featuring a staged reading of Manhood by director Sarah Hughes; a public forum about immigration and theater, led by performance artist Shirotama Hitsujiya; and concerts by local koto and shamisen masters Yumi Kurosawa and Yoko Reikano Kimura as well as renowned jazz pianist Makoto Ozone.

Tickets for Makoto Ozone: Jazz Virtuoso go on sale for members on March 30 and for the general public on April 6.

Award-winning playwright Hideto Iwai depicts the twisted fates of four men as they face the harsh realities of growing old in Manhood. Enjoy director Sarah Hughes’ gender swapped rendition of this off-kilter, dark comedy.

Performance artist Shirotama Hitsujiya returns to New York for a residency focused on the stories of Vietnamese women living in this megacity. Join us in an intimate public forum that explores the crossroads between theater, women’s issues and immigration.

Travel around the world and across time with New York’s own koto and shamisen masters Yumi Kurosawa and Yoko Reikano Kimura in an evening of contemporary and classical selections, interspersed with duets from the cello and tabla.

Celebrated jazz pianist Makoto Ozone performs selections from his wide-ranging repertoire, from Gershwin to Bernstein to Piazolla and Ravel, in this upbeat and fearless solo performance.
